WIDTH
Slovenian street is a wide boulevard - its width has been determined
by architect Takats before the First World War by the placement
of Faflek and Kolos houses. This width more than adequately
covers all the needs of the urban main street and has the potential
to become a pleasant public space vibrant with city life. Our
proposal is based on the premise that Slovenska street should
not be closed to traffic in its present state. Traffic brings
in energy, dynamism and also users of urban space that - through
use - create an economic base and raise the attractiveness of
the city centre. The current transport width is oversized for
the city centre, because higher speeds are neither viable nor
not desired here. The width of the roadway intended for motor
traffic is narrowed to 5.60m, which automatically reduces speed,
thereby increasing the safety of all involved, and consequently
the well-being of pedestrians while the pedestrian area of the
west side of the street is enlarged to at least 5.70m.
WEST SIDE OF THE STREET - PLANE TREE AVENUE
The new width allows FOR planting of a shady tree-line on the
west side of the street. We propose planting plane trees, the
same as it was on the east side of the street before felling.
Plane trees were introduced to Murska Sobota by architect Novak,
thus establishing the constant of shady French boulevards which
introduced some cosmopolitanism from the Latin part of Europe
to Murska Sobota.
EAST SIDE OF THE STREET
There are no interventions into the existing state of the east
side of the street. Regulation begins at the curb line of the
current cycle paths. We suggest that the bicycle traffic in
both directions is moved to the eastern side. The current cycle
path is extending towards the roadway for a meter, thus obtaining
a width of 2.75 m necessary for two-way traffic. If one direction
was arranged along the west side, the width of 0,75m width would
be lost (the width of each separate lane being 1.75 m), and
even more important is the effect of regulation of both directions
of bicycle traffic in one route.
MATERIALITY, URBAN EQUIPMENT
Pedestrian area of the west side of the Slovenska Street is
paved with high-quality concrete pavers, optionally with a mosaic
colour pattern, which prevents visible defects and inclinations
of arrangements, as well as being less susceptible to effects
of time and fatigue. Cast iron grates are placed around the
trunks of new plane trees, spaces between trees become ideal
for a street furniture - benches, bike racks, advertising panels,
street lighting. In front of Blagovnica department store, pedestrian
area is extensively expanded, which allows for installation
of larger benches with flower arrangements in the middle.
Development of the entire area would be greatly helped by integration
the two of the two programme "basins" of the city centre - Slovenska
Street and its western hinterland. In addition to abolishing
motor traffic between Kocljeva and Slovenska and Victory Square
and Slomškova Street, this can be increased by additional penetration
of Blagovnica into the space between the Marketplace and Cultural
Centre. With the complexity of the ownership structure is currently
not beneficial to this idea; the future may bring new possibilities.
